Most of Saigon's big sights sit within about a kilometre of each other in former District 1, so you can do them on foot in a day. The heat is the real constraint. This route keeps you indoors around midday and outside in the morning and evening.
The route
| Time | Stop | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 8:00 | Independence Palace | Arrive at opening, before the tour groups |
| 10:00 | Notre-Dame Cathedral (outside), Central Post Office | 10 minutes' walk |
| 11:00 | Book Street | Next to the post office |
| 12:00 | Lunch | |
| 13:30 | War Remnants Museum | Indoors for the hottest hours |
| 16:00 | Coffee break | |
| 17:00 | Bến Thành Market | Cooler late in the day |
| 18:30 | City Hall lights, Nguyễn Huệ walking street, Opera House | |
| Evening | Waterbus or a rooftop bar |
From May to November, afternoon downpours are common. Front-load anything outdoors.
Independence Palace (Dinh Độc Lập)
- Address: 135 Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa, Bến Thành (former District 1)
- Gates: 135 Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa 7am–6pm; 106 Nguyễn Du 8am–4pm
- Tickets (2026 prices): palace plus exhibition 80,000 VND, palace only 40,000 VND, ages 6–15 20,000 VND
- The 40,000/65,000 VND you'll see in older guides is the previous price list.
- Allow about 90 minutes including the basement bunker and the roof.
Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office
- Notre-Dame: 01 Công xã Paris, Sài Gòn (former District 1)
- The cathedral has been under restoration since 2017. The crosses went back on the spires in March 2026, but visitors still can't go inside and the site is fenced. Completion is planned for late 2027; the priest heading the restoration has said that date won't hold. Treat it as a photo stop.
- Central Post Office: 2 Công xã Paris, right next door. Free, and still a working post office. The vaulted main hall is the reason to go in.
- Nguyễn Văn Bình, the lane beside the post office, is Book Street. It's shaded and a good place to sit for a few minutes.
War Remnants Museum
- Address: 28 Võ Văn Tần, Xuân Hòa (former District 3), 10–15 minutes' walk from the palace
- Hours: daily 7:30am–5:30pm, last tickets 5pm
- Tickets: 40,000 VND, also sold online at ticket.baotangchungtichchientranh.vn
- The Agent Orange galleries are hard going. Think about it if you're with children.
- Allow 90 minutes to 2 hours.
Bến Thành and the evening
- Bến Thành Market: the square in front is being redone through 2025–2026, but the market is trading as normal. No air conditioning, so late afternoon is easier. Expect to bargain.
- City Hall: closed to visitors. The lights come on around 6:30pm; the square in front is the place for photos.
- Nguyễn Huệ walking street runs from City Hall to the river. It's for an evening stroll, not bars.
- Opera House: free to look at; shows (such as the AO Show) need tickets.
Getting around: Metro and Waterbus
- Metro Line 1 (opened December 2024): Bến Thành, Opera House (Nhà hát Thành phố) and Ba Son stations are the useful ones. Single trips 7,000–20,000 VND, day pass 40,000 VND, 3-day pass 90,000 VND. Roughly 5am–10pm, until 11pm at weekends
- Saigon Waterbus: from Bạch Đằng pier, 15,000 VND a ride. At sunset it's the cheapest river view in town.
- In October 2026 river traffic on the Saigon River stops on some days while the Bạch Đằng–Thủ Thiêm footbridge is installed. Check before you go.
- For short hops, a Grab motorbike is quickest.
If you have more time
- Bitexco Skydeck (49th floor): about 240,000 VND
- HCMC Museum and Fine Arts Museum: around 30,000 VND each
- For the evening, see rooftop bars; for coffee stops, the coffee guide.
