- If it rains (May–November)
This plan assumes you land at Tan Son Nhat around 8am and are staying in former District 1. The problem with a morning arrival is simple: you're in the city by 10:30, and most hotels won't give you a room until 2pm. Here's how to fill the gap without dragging a suitcase around in the heat. Times are a guide, not a timetable.
The night before
- Book your hotel with this day in mind. Standard check-in in Vietnam is 2pm and check-out is noon. Email the hotel, say what time you land, and ask whether they can hold your bags and whether early check-in is possible.
- Early check-in is usually "if a room is free". Some hotels charge extra, often quoted at around 30% of the nightly rate for check-in between 9am and 2pm.
- If you're on an overnight flight and need to sleep the moment you arrive, the only sure option is to book the night before as well.
- Set up an eSIM before you fly (SIM and Grab guide). It saves one queue at the airport.
8:00 Land, then immigration
- Mid-morning is the slowest time at immigration, because several international flights arrive together. Queues of 1.5 hours or more are reported between 8 and 11am.
- Have your passport and, if you need one, a printout of your e-visa ready. Apply only at evisa.gov.vn.
- A paid fast-track service will walk you through a priority lane.
About 9:30 Arrivals hall: SIM and a little cash
- SIM counters are just past customs and generally open from 6am.
- Change only what you need for the first day at the airport, say 500,000–1,000,000 VND. Count the notes at the counter. Rates in the city are better; see the money exchange guide.
About 10:00 Grab to the hotel
- Grab to former District 1 is 100,000–180,000 VND and 25–45 minutes. Use the numbered Grab pick-up points outside arrivals (airport guide).
- Ignore people in the hall offering "Taxi?".
About 10:45 Leave your bags
- Leave your luggage at reception and keep a small bag with what you need for the afternoon: sunscreen, a hat, a charger, a change of shirt.
- If your hotel can't store bags, there are paid luggage storage services in the backpacker area and through booking apps.
11:00 Brunch: pho
Most famous pho places are breakfast places, so pick one that's still open.
- Phở Hương Bình, 148 Võ Thị Sáu, Xuân Hòa (former District 3), daily 6:30am–9pm. It's 10 minutes on foot from the War Remnants Museum.
- Phở Phượng, 25 Hoàng Sa, along the canal, open until 8:30pm (2pm on Mondays).
- Phở Minh on Pasteur closes at 10:30am, so it's for tomorrow.
More options in pho and cơm tấm.
12:00–14:00 Sit out the heat
Midday is the hottest part of the day and the worst time to walk. Pick something indoors.
- Coffee with air-conditioning. A cà phê sữa đá is also a quick fix for a short night (coffee guide).
- A foot massage. Several of the spas in our massage guide open from 9 or 10am, and some list the tip in the price.
- Or go straight to the War Remnants Museum (7:30am–5:30pm, last tickets 5pm, 40,000 VND). It's indoors, but allow 90 minutes to 2 hours and know that some galleries are hard to look at.
14:00 Check in and rest
Shower and sleep for an hour or two if you were on a night flight. Don't skip this. The plan below runs until late.
16:00 Independence Palace
- Gate at 135 Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa is open 7am–6pm. Palace plus exhibition 80,000 VND, palace only 40,000 VND.
- Allow about 90 minutes, including the basement bunker.
- Notre-Dame Cathedral is still under restoration and fenced off. The Central Post Office next door is free to walk into. Both are a 10-minute walk away.
Full route and details: one day in central Saigon.
17:30 Exchange the rest, then Bến Thành
- If you need more cash: Hưng Long, 86 Mạc Thị Bưởi, and Eximbank's counter at 135 Đồng Khởi are in the centre.
- Bến Thành Market has no air-conditioning, so late afternoon is the easiest time. Bargain, and check prices before you agree.
18:30 Nguyễn Huệ and dinner
- City Hall's lights come on around 6:30pm. Walk down Nguyễn Huệ walking street towards the river.
- Dinner: keep it simple on day one. See what to eat for dishes and where to find them.
20:30 One drink, or bed
- If you still have energy, a rooftop bar is the easy first-night choice. Some, Chill Skybar in particular, turn away flip-flops and tank tops.
- Bùi Viện is loud and goes on past midnight. It can wait until night two (nightlife guide).
If it rains (May–November)
Afternoon storms usually pass within an hour. Swap the palace and Bến Thành around, or wait it out in a café. Grab gets slow and expensive during heavy rain.
